Funerals

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies sake. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 504)

The liturgy for the deceased is inherently an Easter liturgy, drawing its profound significance from the Resurrection. It stands as a testament to the assurance that, just as Jesus experienced resurrection, so shall we. This liturgy is marked by joy, rooted in the unwavering conviction that nothing—neither death, nor life, nor any force in existence—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

However, this joy does not negate the Christian experience of grief. The deep love we share with one another in Christ invokes genuine sorrow when death parts us. Even Jesus, in his humanity, wept at the grave of a dear friend. Thus, as we celebrate the entrance of a loved one into the closer presence of the Lord, we simultaneously share in the sorrow of those who mourn.

Your funeral serves as an opportunity to provide solace to your friends and loved ones, affirming the Church's steadfast belief in the transformative power of resurrection. Within the Episcopal Church's burial office, there are ample opportunities for personalization, allowing you to incorporate scriptures and hymns that hold special meaning for you.

Planning your funeral well in advance is a wonderful gift to your family, ensuring that your wishes are known and respected. Should you choose to make these preparations, we safeguard your plans and documentation, and in the event of your passing, we inform your family members of your desires.
