Ash Wednesday at St. Paul’s Cathedral

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection, prayer, and renewal.

In the Anglican tradition, Lent is not about perfection or self judgment. It is a time to tell the truth about our lives and to turn again toward God.

Ash Wednesday offers a place to begin.

A quiet moment to pause.

In the midst of busy days and full lives, Ash Wednesday invites us to stop.

To reflect.
To breathe.
To remember who we are.

The service is simple and unhurried, creating space for honesty and prayer.

You are welcome to come, whether you are certain in faith or still searching.

An invitation to begin again.

The season of Lent begins with a turning.

A turning away from what weighs us down.
A turning toward what gives life.

Ash Wednesday is not about getting everything right.

It is about beginning again with honesty and hope.

The sign of the ashes.

During the service, ashes are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross.

The ashes remind us that we are mortal and deeply human.

They also remind us that our lives are held within God’s mercy.

Receiving ashes is always optional. You may come forward or remain in your seat.

What to expect

You do not need to know what to do.

You may sit quietly, follow along, or simply observe.

The service lasts about one hour.

Children are welcome.

Holy Eucharist (Lord’s Supper, Communion) will be celebrated. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion, and all people may come forward for a blessing if they wish.

You are welcome to participate as fully as you wish.

There is no expectation that you participate in every part of the service.
